Elisabeth C. remembers…

Edith and Mel used to limit their car trips to every other day — an inspiration to us all.
For many years Edith hired me to tend her yard. Among the many funny memories I have of that experience was her telling me to get rid of all the columbine that had proliferated in her yard because, as she said, “I don’t like droopy plants.”

Another ditto for us! Have such wonderful memories of Edith, and Mel. Edith in particular walked both my kids to school until Ariana was well into in middle school (6 + years). AnEdith’s granola recipe was famous in Arcadia 🙂 I am touched that the family would like both Edith and Mel honored in a memorial service at Arcadia….

Me three. Chiara was part of the walk to school bunch when she was in kindergarten. They all (including Edith)  used to pretend they were characters from the cartoon horse movie “Spirit.” Edith brought horse food (carrots and cookies and crackers) and they neighed their way all the way to McDougle. Edith had a playful side that not everyone was lucky enough to know about. I used to walk with them too sometimes, just to be part of the fun.

Edith considered these school walks part of her sweat equity, even before it was “legal” and what a beautiful example this was of a community contribution in the “social” category we defined with Laird this weekend…

I only wish I’d have spent more time with Edith myself…

Hey, Susan,

This is how I remember Edith as well – stopping by to pick up Diana for school -starting when she was in kindergarten!  I appreciated her generosity so much.  I just asked Diana for memories, and she recounted how Edith would invite her over for “butterfly wing” pastry.

So long, Edith,

Jane

Susan K. remembers…

I remember when I first moved here in 2002, I used to watch, from my upstairs office window, as Edith made her rounds through Arcadia every morning, picking up children as she went along and then walking the lot to McDougle elementary school.  I thought that’s what I want to do when I grow up!
I’m missing her.  Susan

Norma remembers…

i want to join the voices celebrating edith’s life and her part in arcadia. edith was a huge help for me in getting going with arcadia children’s theater. she was so organized and energetic, and so always willing to help. i couldnt have done those many years without her support.
i also celebrate her independent and determined spirit for all the many social issues that she and i feel so passionate about. she was an inspiration to me.
farewell edith.

Donell remembers…

Dear, Dear Edith, She was a force to be reckoned with. Her spirit was big and courageous. When I first moved here, Edith and I and other Arcadians took buses to DC to protest the Iraq war. I marveled at her determination – at about age 83 – to walk the entire length of the protest route!

I am honored and delighted to have known her! And, I agree, Jim, she would have been very happy to hear the many positive things said about Arcadia/Arcadians this weekend – especially yesterday during the talking circle.

Blessings to you, Edith!
